What is the cabbage diet?

The cabbage diet is an instant diet. What does it mean? It lasts only 7 days and allows for a surprisingly large weight reduction in a very short time. The cabbage diet gives you the opportunity to get rid of even 4 or 5 kilograms in a week. The diet is often used by people who want to lose a few kilograms quickly before an important celebration or event. This diet is mainly based on the consumption of cabbage soup, which is enriched with fresh vegetables, fruit and small amounts of meat and rice. The cabbage diet is characterised by low calorie content, but also greater monotony. What is more, this diet allows to get rid of accumulated water, harmful substances and speed up metabolism. At the same time, it is worth noting that if we switch to a more varied, low-calorie diet after the end of the cabbage diet, the effects of weight loss will be even better and long-lasting.

Recipe for cabbage soup

Ingredients

  • head of white cabbage or Italian cabbage (or 3 kg of sauerkraut rinsed to get rid of salt),
  • 6 onions,
  • 2 green peppers,
  • a bunch of ribbed celery,
  • 6 fresh tomatoes or a can of tomatoes,
  • 3 litres of water
  • 2 bay leaves, a few allspice grains, a few peppercorns, chilli, caraway seeds, marjoram, garlic, chilli;

All vegetables must be washed thoroughly. Chop the cabbage into thin strips and the pepper, celery and onion into small cubes. The tomatoes should be scalded and peeled from the skin before dicing. Pour 1 tablespoon of olive oil into a deep frying pan, put all vegetables except cabbage and stew until everything issoft. At the very end, add the cabbage. Put everything into a pot, pour in water and season. The soup prepared in this way should be enough for the whole week of the diet.

What about cabbage soup?

The cabbage diet allows us to eat some vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, lettuce, cucumbers, peppers, carrots, parsley, leek or celery. We can definitely forget about potatoes, corn, peas, beans or other leguminous vegetables for a week. In the case of fruit, the diet includes the consumption of small quantities of apples, oranges, melon or watermelon. We do not talk categorically about bananas, avocados or cherries.

Unfortunately, when preparing a meal, we must give up salt, sugar and fats. The cabbage diet does not consume carbohydrate products and a small amount of protein products. Only in the second stage of the diet, animal products such as lean beef (or chicken breast) or fish with white meat, e.g. minnow appear.

The cabbage diet does not allow sweets, salty snacks or alcoholic and sweetened drinks.

The rules of the cabbage diet

  1. it lasts 7 days
  2. the basis of the diet is cabbage soup, which can be eaten in unlimited quantities
  3. certain fruit and vegetables may be eaten for the first three days
  4. on the 4th day of weight loss, a milk and banana-based cocktail appears
  5. small amounts of meat, fish and rice may be introduced into the diet in the following days
  6. drink a lot of mineral water - about 2 liters each day
  7. the diet is supported by drinking herbal teas
  8. it is recommended to prepare infusions that accelerate the metabolism, have diuretic and slightly laxative effects
  9. drinking green tea and fresh juices is recommended.

  • Day 1: cabbage soup, fruit, still mineral water, tea, coffee
  • Day 2: cabbage soup, vegetables (preferably green or leafy), still mineral water, tea, coffee
  • Day 3: cabbage soup, fruit, steamed vegetables, still mineral water, coffee, tea
  • Day 4: cabbage soup, skimmed milk-based fruit cocktail, cooked turkey fillet with cabbage and carrot salad, still mineral water, coffee, tea
  • Day 5: cabbage soup, fruit, steamed vegetables, bigos with onions, carrots, red peppers, still mineral water, tea, coffee
  • Day 6: cabbage soup, vegetable salad, fruit, bigos with onions, carrots, red peppers, still mineral water, tea, coffee
  • Day 7: cabbage soup, rice with vegetables, fruit and vegetable juice, still mineral water, coffee, tea

Advantages and disadvantages of the scavenger diet

Advantages

  1. simplicity - the products necessary for its preparation are cheap and easily accessible
  2. The rules of the diet are uncomplicated and easy to apply
  3. is rich in many minerals
  4. helps to make up for deficiencies in certain ingredients
  5. provides quick and satisfying results

Disadvantages

  1. the diet is not based on principles that can be followed throughout life
  2. requires the elimination of many needed products from the menu
  3. long-term use can cause many vitamin and mineral deficiencies
  4. Low calorie diet can cause headaches, weakness, stomachaches
  5. the effects of the cabbage diet are very unstable
  6. may cause the yo-yo effect
  7. is monotonous

Effects of the cabbage diet

Although the cabbage diet lasts only 7 days, it provides delightful results. Already after the first days from the beginning of the slimming treatment we can observe, among others, a reduction of fat tissue. It cannot be overlooked that the stew diet regulates the digestive system, cleanses the intestines and has a diuretic effect. During a 7-day weight loss treatment we can count on a loss of 4 or 5 kilograms. Nevertheless, we must be aware that we mainly remove the weight of water, which is removed from the body by taking increased doses of potassium from cabbage and other vegetables. Therefore, we must not forget to supplement the body with water, even though vegetables and the soup itself are a source of considerable amounts of water.
